Northwich Parkrun

Finally my hometown has a Parkrun! Despite now living over 200 miles away, I'd spotted some mutterings on Facebook and in other places about a Northwich Parkrun. It's had a junior Parkrun for some time now, so I thought it was only a matter of time before it would get its own proper one.

I managed to work it so that Abigail and I could be staying at my mum and dad's place en route to the Lake District; in doing so, I was able to get to the inaugural event.

The course is based in Carey Park, just to the north of the town centre. There is ample free car parking nearby, although I took advantage of its proximity to my parents' place by running there.

After a friendly welcome from Amy the Run Director and some warm applause for everyone that made the event happen and we were off. The first mile is a loop around the gravel track circling the large cow field; midway through the loop there's an energy-sapping hill/switchback to watch out for. After mile 1, you then deviate over Witton Brook and on to the wooded path heading towards Marbury Country Park. At mile 2 you turn south, skirting around the edge of Neumann's Flash before the final sprint towards the finish.

I came second, which I'm quite pleased with for an inaugural event. Overall it's a lovely course, with lots of nice views of the river and woodland. I should also say that the team got the results uploaded remarkably quickly!

What follows is perhaps more of a reminder to myself than a blog per se. The Dragon's Back Race is such a long and intense event, and with my head swirling with so much emotion I want to record my thoughts and memories of this great event before the mundanities of normal life creep back. Registration Day - Sunday 3rd September - Conwy An early start leaving Thanet Parkway heading for Crewe. My first minor heart attack comes when the station board lists my train as 'delayed'. Rail strikes the day previous had disrupted many a travel plan and I was worried this would be the start of my woes. Fortunately, it wasn't; the station board updates - the train is again on time. Relief. The journey turns out to be uneventful except for sharing a table with Giles Brandreth between Euston and Crewe. I get to Crewe and mum and dad are waiting. Kong Mini Mountain Marathon - Dolgellau

On an incredibly wet and windy Sunday morning in Dolgellau, North Wales, I jogged from our hotel to the Dolgellau Institute to register for the third and final instalment of the Kong Mini Mountain Marathon for 2023. Mini Mountain Marathons are, ostensibly, straightforward events; participants are given a map at the start and the map shows twenty-five 'control points' to be reached in whatever sequence the participant sees fit. Control points furthest away, or highest up, are allocated a higher points value. The aim is for the participant to select their own route, and to 'dib in' to as many of the control points as possible within a four hour time limit. It's basically orienteering on steroids. As I walked to the start, I surveyed the map; there were two control points (1 and 8) close to the start. CP1 was to west, and CP8 was to the east. Fellbarrow and Low Fell

I've long been fascinated by the outlying and less frequented Wainwrights. I fancied doing a run that didn't require a long drive early in the morning and one that was a little more forgiving given that my legs were still suffering after the previous day's activities. Fellbarrow and Low Fell stand alone next to Loweswater. To me they've always looked a bit geographically isolated and not as attractive as their larger cousins across Lorton Vale. Nonetheless, they're there to be climbed/run. I parked the car at Waterend at the head of Loweswater. There's a decent little car park by the roadside there. Immediately opposite the car park I began my run heading up Grange Lane, a little tarmac road leading to a public bridleway. I headed north on the bridleway. The bridleway is flat and relatively mud-free for the time of year. After approximately a mile, I took a sharp right to the east, following a steep, but clear path up Smithy Fell.
